چکیده

In this paper, we present a new algorithm for vertex guarding of a triangulated surface, which takes into account the heights of the vertices and considers the global visibility of the guards. In this algorithm, the initial surface is reduced to a collection of simple polygons and trivial triangulated surfaces. This is done by assigning guards to some vertices and removing the faces covered by these guards. The remaining simple regions are then guarded properly. The running time of our algorithm is linear in terms of n, the number of vertices. The upper bound of the assigned guards is   3 / 2n , and its expected number is   2 / n , which is the same as the worst case lower bound for the problem. The running time of the best known algorithm for this problem is ) ( 2 / 3 n O which selects at most   2 / n guards. We expect a better performance of our algorithm on the average in practice. This has been verified by experimentation.

Fuzzy Model of Human’s Performance for Guarding a Territory in an Air Combat

This paper proposes a new method for a three dimensional fuzzy model of pilot's performance for guarding a territory with a short-distance between two aircraft in an air combat task with a gun. A third-order nonlinear point mass vehicle model is considered for an aircraft's flight dynamics. The desired value of the velocity, the flight path and the heading angles are obtained from some derived ...

Exact Algorithms for Terrain Guarding

Given a 1.5-dimensional terrain T , also known as an x-monotone polygonal chain, the Terrain Guarding problem seeks a set of points of minimum size on T that guards all of the points on T . Here, we say that a point p guards a point q if no point of the line segment pq is strictly below T . The Terrain Guarding problem has been extensively studied for over 20 years. In 2005 it was already estab...

Altitude Terrain Guarding and Guarding Uni-Monotone Polygons

We show that the problem of guarding an x-monotone terrain from an altitude line and the problem of guarding a uni-monotone polygon are equivalent. We present a polynomial time algorithm for both problems, and show that the cardinality of a minimum guard set and the cardinality of a maximum witness set coincide. Thus, uni-monotone polygons are perfect; this result also extends to monotone mount...

Optimal guarding of polygons and monotone chains

In this paper we study several problems concerning the guarding of a polygon or a x-monotone polygonal chain P with n vertices from a set of points lying on it. Our results are: (1) An O(n logn) time sequential algorithm for computing the shortest guarding boundary chain of a polygon P. (2) An O(n logn) time sequential algorithm for computing the smallest set of consecutive edges guarding a pol...

A Constant-Factor Approximation Algorithm for Optimal 1.5D Terrain Guarding

We present the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for a non-trivial instance of the optimal guarding (coverage) problem in polygons. In particular, we give an O(1)-approximation algorithm for placing the fewest point guards on a 1.5D terrain, so that every point of the terrain is seen by at least one guard. While polylogarithmic-factor approximations follow from set cover results, ou...

A 4-Approximation Algorithm for Guarding 1.5-Dimensional Terrains

In the 1.5-dimensional terrain guarding problem we are given as input an x-monotone chain (the terrain) and asked for the minimum set of guards (points on the terrain) such that every point on the terrain is seen by at least one guard. It has recently been shown that the 1.5-dimensional terrain guarding problem is approximable to within a constant factor [3,7], though no attempt has been made t...
